Description
Domaine de Marcoux's Côtes du Rhône comes from biodynamically farmed old-vine parcels on the edge of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard.
The wine was traditionally drawn from two small plots in the northern sector near Orange: a hectare at Maucoil planted in the 1930s and another at Bois Lauzon planted in 1965. Two newer parcels close to the winery in the north of Châteauneuf have since joined the blend. Grenache leads, with Syrah and a little Mourvèdre, and the vineyards are farmed biodynamically as they are across the estate. The grapes are hand harvested and sorted twice, once in the vineyard and again in the cellar, then fermented with wild yeasts in cement tanks. There is no new oak involved, which keeps the emphasis on the perfume and silkiness of old-vine Grenache rather than on structure, and makes this a useful introduction to the way the Armenier sisters work at Châteauneuf itself.
Ready now and good for five years or so, it suits grilled sausages, ratatouille and roast lamb; serve at 16–18°C.
