Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves 2021

Domaine des Croix Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves is made from 0.30 hectares planted in 1968, directly alongside the Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus.

Les Grèves is regarded by many as the heartland of Beaune, the cru that produces the appellation's deepest and longest-lived wines. Jasper Morris MW puts it exactly that way in Inside Burgundy. The soils are brown clay with gravel, and Domaine des Croix farms a single small parcel of 0.30 hectares planted in 1968, immediately next to Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus, generally held to be the best location on the slope. The vines have been organically farmed for more than a decade. David Croix vinified with 35 per cent whole bunches and matured the wine without any new oak at all, so the structure comes from the site and the stems rather than from wood. This is the most serious of his Beaune bottlings.

Give it three to five years and expect it to run for a dozen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, venison or aged hard cheese.
