Domaine des Croix Saint-Romain Combe Bazin 2022

Combe Bazin is a steep, stony vineyard on white soils at Saint-Romain, and this is only the third vintage Domaine des Croix has made from it.

Saint-Romain sits high in a fold of the hills behind Meursault and Auxey-Duresses, and its altitude and shallow limestone soils make it one of the cooler white wine communes of the Côte de Beaune. David Croix's parcel covers a single hectare and yields very little; most of it is being replanted with mass-selection cuttings, and this release came from just two barrels, drawn from the best 15% of the vines. The grapes were lightly crushed and given a gentle three-hour press. Fermentation was spontaneous, and the wine aged for a year on lees in used 500-litre barrels followed by six months in concrete. Croix describes the archetypal Combe Bazin as a Saint-Romain that fills out the palate, which is what this delivers.

Drink now and over the next six to eight years, with grilled fish, roast chicken or goat's cheese, at 10 to 12°C.
