Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre Clos Beaujeu 2022

Domaine Gérard Boulay's Clos Beaujeu comes from two parcels on a historic Chavignol site first recorded in 1328, one of them inside the original medieval clos.

The vineyard is usually seen on labels as Cul de Beaujeu; Boulay uses Clos de Beaujeu because his main parcel lies within the clos established by the monks of Beaujeu in the Middle Ages, known historically as Le Grand Clos. In his book on the Chavignol vineyard, Thibaut Boulay records the site appearing in documents of 1328 as the Clausus de Bellojoco. The slope is Kimmeridgian limestone and clay, the local terres blanches, particularly rocky and strewn with fossils, which makes it difficult to farm; vine age runs from 30 to a remarkable 110 years. A second, steeper parcel closer to the village climbs at a 60 per cent gradient. These south-east-facing plots give the most structured and nervy wines at the domaine. The wine ferments spontaneously and rests for ten months, 60 per cent in large upright cask and 40 per cent in three- and four-year-old 300-litre barrels.

Still reserved and worth five years or more, with decades of potential behind that. Serve with roast fish, veal or a hard goat's cheese at 10–12°C.
