Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts-Damnés 2022

Domaine Gérard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts-Damnés comes from a 40-degree, south-facing plot of forty-five-year-old vines on the chalky clay of Chavignol.

Monts-Damnés, pronounced mon-dannay, is the best-known vineyard of Chavignol, the hamlet within Sancerre that produces the appellation’s most textural and mineral whites. The Boulay family has farmed here for generations. This bottling comes from vines of about forty-five years on one of the steepest inclines of the vineyard, a south-facing plot on terres blanches, the white chalky clay and limestone that runs through Chavignol, directly adjacent to Vatan’s Clos la Néore. Boulay vinifies the cuvée in three- to four-year-old Tronçais casks from the Rousseau cooperage, then finishes the ageing in large cask before bottling. Monts-Damnés is one of Chavignol’s warmer sites, and the wine walks the line between ripeness and the tension that marks Boulay’s Sancerres, with density and energy in equal measure.

Rewarding with a few years in bottle, though good young if given air. Serve at 10-12°C with ceviche, tuna tartare or sashimi.
