Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Les Châtelots is made only from the eighty-year-old vines in the parcel, with the younger material going into the village wine.
Les Chatelots is a 2.96-hectare Premier Cru close to the village of Chambolle-Musigny, partly adjoining Les Charmes. Its topsoil is deeper and more alluvial than the crus higher up the slope and is scattered with small stones, and the wines it gives are bright and energetic rather than broad. Barthod reserves the cuvée for the oldest vines in the holding, now around eighty years, and declassifies the younger plantings into the village Chambolle-Musigny, which is one reason that village wine performs as it does. Vinification follows the domaine’s usual pattern, with 20 per cent new oak, enough to frame the wine without weighing on its lift. The result is floral and finely drawn, and it is generally the most immediately charming of the Premiers Crus from the southern side of the village.
Fine from three years and holding for a decade or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast quail, veal or a plate of soft cheeses.
