Description
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is the domaine's largest premier cru holding and the natural southern extension of the Bonnes Mares slope.
Barthod farms 0.86 hectares here, with vines averaging close to sixty years of age. Thin, rocky topsoil and the height of the site combine to give one of the most mineral wines in the range, while a sunlit south-facing exposure carries the fruit to full ripeness. The vines sit chiefly on shallow white soil, with barely 30 centimetres before roots reach rock, in contrast to the deeper red soils found further north towards Les Fuées. Ghislaine Barthod compares the intensity and minerality of Les Cras to Bonnes Mares, lying as it does on the same slope a little further south. The wine reads as a composite of the domaine's other terroirs, joining the perfumed lift of Les Véroilles to the wild fruit and earth of Les Fuées and Aux Beaux Bruns and the structural depth of Les Baudes.
Give it five years and drink over the following fifteen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast venison, mushroom-stuffed pheasant or Époisses.
