Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Le Bourg is Romain Guiberteau’s first release from a single hectare of 1940s Chenin Blanc on the Brézé hill.
Saumur’s white wines are Chenin Blanc grown on tuffeau, the soft yellow limestone that also built the châteaux of the middle Loire, and the hill of Brézé is the appellation’s most closely studied site. Despite the name, this Le Bourg has no connection with the Le Bourg at Chacé made famous by Clos Rougeard. Guiberteau’s parcel sits below Clos des Carmes and slopes towards the village, on sandy clay over a soft tuffeau bedrock, with vines planted in the 1940s. The combination of old-vine density and the pungent minerality of the site gives a wine of real intensity and tension. The fruit is pressed as whole bunches and fermented with indigenous yeasts, then aged for twelve months in used barrels before bottling. Guiberteau describes more slate-like minerality here than in his other Brézé cuvées.
Worth decanting, and built to reward five to ten years in the cellar. Serve at 10-12°C with roast turbot, veal with morels or a mature comté.
