Domaine Henri Germain Meursault Clos des Mouches Rouge 2022

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault Clos des Mouches Rouge is a walled monopole in Meursault planted entirely to Pinot Noir, and is not the Beaune premier cru of the same name.

Meursault is thought of as white wine country, and the reds grown there are usually sold under the Volnay name. Henri Germain takes the opposite view and labels this one as Meursault. The half-hectare site lies close to the Volnay boundary, due south of Les Santenots, and is one of the few walled vineyards left in the commune; some official maps still show it as a white-producing plot. It is planted with old Pinot Fin, put in the ground in 1949, and yields are very low, under 25 hl/ha even in a generous year. The wine that results is consistently red-fruited, perfumed and pretty rather than dense, with the finesse and purity that the site and the vine age between them tend to give, and enough balance and substance to reward keeping.

Attractive young and capable of eight to twelve years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, duck breast or a mushroom and thyme galette.
