Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes 2023

Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes comes from the Premier Cru section of Monts Luisants, ploughed by horse.

Monts Luisants is an unusual climat in that it is split across village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru classifications, the lower part falling within Clos de la Roche. This cuvée comes from the Premier Cru section, and Ponsot names it after the lark, alouette, to distinguish it from the white wine the domaine makes in the same lieu-dit, Clos des Monts Luisants Blanc. The vines are between 23 and 30 years old, rooted in white oolite limestone high on the Morey slope, and this part of the vineyard is now worked with a horse. Historically this has been a deep, slow-unwinding red Burgundy that only turns into a vivid, flowing, Chambolle-like Premier Cru after around a decade in bottle, though warmer seasons are now producing more open and immediately delicious versions.

Approachable earlier than it once was but will reward eight to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, duck or braised beef cheek.
