Domaine Stéphane Aladame Montagny 1er Cru ‘Découverte’ 2019

Découverte is Stéphane Aladame's blend from his youngest Montagny premier cru vines, and it never sees any wood.

Montagny sits at the southern tip of the Côte Chalonnaise, near Buxy; it is a white-only appellation on marl and limestone where a large share of the vineyard carries premier cru status. Stéphane Aladame set up here in 1992, aged eighteen, renting close to three hectares from a retiring grower, Maxime Millet, and has since built the holding to around eight hectares - all of it premier cru, with no village wine in the range at all. He bottles four single climats, Les Burnins, Les Coères, Les Maroques and Les Vignes Derrière, with nearly half the holding lying in Les Maroques, alongside two blends: the old-vine Sélection Vieilles Vignes, drawn from vines of forty to eighty years, and this one. Découverte is assembled from vines under twenty years old and is raised entirely without oak, which leaves the appellation's chalky cut and citrus fruit unencumbered. Some parcels, Les Vignes Derrière among them, are farmed organically, though Aladame has not taken certification across the domaine.

Ready on release and good for three or four years; serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled white fish or a goat's cheese salad.
