Domaine Stéphane Aladame Montagny 1er Cru Les Coères 2020

Domaine Stéphane Aladame Montagny 1er Cru Les Coères is a Côte Chalonnaise Chardonnay raised entirely in neutral 350-litre barrels.

Montagny is the southernmost appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise and produces white wine only, from Chardonnay grown on marl and limestone slopes around Buxy and Montagny-lès-Buxy. Stéphane Aladame took over a tiny holding here as a teenager in 1992 and has since become the reference grower of the appellation. He farms just half a hectare on this east-facing site, in the Montagny-lès-Buxy section of the terroir, on deep marl and blue clay at 290 metres. Two parcels go into the wine, the elder planted in 1985, supplemented by a ration of Chardonnay Muscaté, an old strain of Chardonnay that Benjamin Leroux also works with in the Meursault Narvaux terroir. The wine was fermented and raised for ten months entirely in neutral 350-litre oak barrels, so the wood contributes texture and slow oxygen rather than flavour.

Drink now or over the next five or six years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a quiche of leek and gruyère.
