Domaine Stéphane Aladame Montagny ‘Prélude’ 2020

Domaine Stéphane Aladame Montagny ‘Prélude’ is the entry-level bottling from a Côte Chalonnaise estate that works with a single appellation and a single grape.

Montagny lies at the southern end of the Côte Chalonnaise and is planted only to Chardonnay, on limestone and marl slopes that sit a little higher and cooler than much of the Côte de Beaune. Stéphane Aladame took over a handful of hectares here in the early 1990s while still in his teens and has since become the reference point for the appellation. Prélude is drawn from vineyards in Le May, in the commune of Saint-Vallerin, and Les Coères in Montagny itself. It was raised for ten months in a combination of tank, which accounts for 60% of the blend, and older barrels for the remaining 40%, so the oak works on texture rather than flavour. The result is a straightforward, well-cut white Burgundy at a level where value is increasingly hard to find.

Approachable on release and good for two or three years, it works with roast chicken, grilled whiting or a soft washed-rind cheese. Serve at 10-12°C.
