Fontodi Syrah Casa Via 2020

Fontodi Syrah Casa Via is a peppery, savoury Syrah grown at Panzano in Chianti Classico and bottled under the Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT.

In the late 1980s the Manetti family did something unusual for a zone given over almost entirely to Sangiovese: they planted this Rhône grape. It grows on the same organic slopes of the Conca d'Oro, galestro and alberese at around 400 metres, where warm days and cool nights let it ripen without losing acidity. The DOCG doesn't admit the variety, hence the regional label. After fermentation in the estate cellar it spends about a year and a half in French barriques.

Dark and peppery in the northern Rhône mould, with olive and cured-meat savour and nothing jammy about it. An hour in a decanter helps. Try it at 16–18°C with grilled lamb, sausages or roast vegetables.
