Garagiste Balnarring Pinot Noir 2021

Garagiste Balnarring Pinot Noir is a single-site Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir.

This site came back into the range in 2021 after a short absence, and the wine was made the way the vineyard asks: wild fermented with a high proportion of whole berries and no whole bunch at all. Barney Flanders is clear about why, since the stems from this particular vineyard will roll straight over the fruit, which is not the case at his flagship Merricks site. Maturation was in 300-litre hogsheads, around a quarter of them new, with ten months on lees before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Hogsheads at that size give a little more oxygen contact than a puncheon without the oak taking over.

Dark cherry, bramble and a fine, grainy tannin, with the savoury mineral edge this vineyard tends to give. Decant it and serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Duck, pork belly, mushroom pasta, or a braise with dark stock will all sit well with it.
