Garagiste Balnarring Pinot Noir 2024

Garagiste Balnarring Pinot Noir is a small-batch Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir from a single vineyard.

Ten kilometres separate this vineyard from the flagship Merricks site, and the difference in the glass is obvious: darker fruit and a finer, grainier tannin. In most vintages it underpins the Stagiaire Pinot and Chardonnay, and only when yields and quality both line up, as they did in 2024, does it get bottled on its own. The MV6 vines went in during 1996, into the brown-grey loam that runs across this part of the Peninsula. Stems are left out here entirely, and the wine spent nine months on lees in 300-litre hogsheads, a fifth of them new, before bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Perfumed and lifted, with dark berry fruit, woody herbs and spice ahead of a plump, juicy middle and a savoury close flecked with minerality. Decant it, serve at 15 degrees, and put it next to a rich braise, roast duck, or slow-cooked lamb shoulder.
