Description
Garagiste Le Stagiaire Gewürztraminer is a dry-styled Gewürztraminer from the Mornington Peninsula.
Six years passed between releases of this wine, because the vines simply did not give enough fruit. The parcel is small and thirty years old, at Tuerong, and in good seasons the bunches average twenty to thirty grams, which is tiny, and part of the reason for the intensity here. 2024 gave just enough to fill one 500-litre barrel. Half the fruit fermented as whole bunches for three weeks, a carbonic element that Barney Flanders uses to build perfume and mouthfeel without picking riper. The other half was pressed as bunches into seasoned wood, and the lot spent seven months on lees in one puncheon.
Textbook Gewürztraminer: rose petal and rosewater, meadow flowers, spice and pure ripe fruit, with a succulent texture, a fleck of phenolics and a line of acidity holding it together. Serve at 11 degrees. It belongs with a degustation menu, or with meltingly ripe Munster.
