Garagiste Le Stagiaire Pinot Gris 2021

Garagiste Le Stagiaire Pinot Gris is a dry Pinot Gris from the Mornington Peninsula.

The second label in Barney Flanders's range takes its name from the French for intern, and it is made to the same standards as the wines above it and priced to be drunk. Pinot Gris has a long history on the Mornington Peninsula, where the cool maritime climate keeps it from turning broad and flabby, and where the best examples are dry and textural, closer to Alsace in intent than to the soft commercial style. This bottling comes from the 2021 vintage, a well-regarded season across southern Victoria. The house approach is minimal handling, wild fermentation and time on lees, and the Gris follows it.

Expect pear and nashi, a touch of spice, and a dry, faintly waxy texture with the acidity to keep it clean. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees. It handles pork and apple, a prosciutto and rocket salad, or a bowl of spaghetti with olive oil and chilli.
