Garagiste Le Stagiaire Pinot Noir 2022

Garagiste Le Stagiaire Pinot Noir is a Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir blended from three sites.

Each vineyard has a job. Merricks, the flagship, brings bright fruit and the savoury quality that runs through everything under this roof. Balnarring, farmed here for twelve years, adds shade and spice. Red Hill, higher, cooler and further south, supplies the straight line down the middle. Put together, they make something none of them would alone. After sorting twice, fermentation began naturally with whole berries and ten per cent whole bunch; the fruit stayed twenty-one days on skins with gentle pump-overs and some plunging late on. Eight months on gross lees was divided between 300-litre hogsheads and foudre, at five per cent new oak, then bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Bright red fruits and brown spice, with a sappy stem lift, soft round tannin and a long savoury finish. Fifteen degrees, with half an hour in the glass. Match it with roast pork, duck ragù, grilled mushrooms, or a wedge of Comté.
