Garagiste Le Stagiaire Pinot Noir 2023

Garagiste Le Stagiaire Pinot Noir is a Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir drawing on four vineyards.

Clonal material changes this wine. Earlier releases were entirely MV6; bringing Merricks North into the blend at thirty-three per cent introduces the Dijon clones 114 and 115, which lend a plush, perfumed edge to the natural power of MV6. Balnarring accounts for forty per cent and adds shade and spice, Red Hill seventeen per cent for linear drive, and Merricks Grove ten per cent for bright fruit and savoury depth. Spontaneous fermentations ran in concrete and stainless steel with whole berries and fifteen per cent whole bunch, twenty-three days on skins, then seven months on gross lees split between 300-litre hogsheads and foudre with five per cent new oak.

This is Mornington Pinot Noir doing what it does best: pretty red fruit, bright perfume, brown spice and a light stem lift, over juicy weight and soft, round tannin. Serve at 15 degrees. Duck breast, roast pork, mushroom risotto, or a good charcuterie plate.
