Garagiste Le Stagiaire Rosé 2021

Garagiste Le Stagiaire Rosé is a dry Mornington Peninsula rosé of Pinot Noir with a little Gewürztraminer.

Merricks Pinot Noir makes up 85 per cent of the blend, with Tuerong Gewürztraminer filling out the rest and lending a whiff of rose petal and lychee to the red fruit. Everything went to the press as whole bunches and then straight to old barriques, fermenting on wild yeast and full solids with no temperature control, the same unhurried treatment Barney Flanders gives his white wines. Seven months on lees built flesh before bottling. Made this way, Mornington rosé is a serious drink and not a poolside afterthought, and it holds its own at the table.

Pale copper-pink, with strawberry, citrus peel and a musky floral edge from the Gewürztraminer. Dry, textural, faintly grippy through the finish. Chill to 9 degrees and let it warm a little in the glass. Grilled prawns, jamón or a spread of charcuterie.
