Description
Garagiste Merricks Chardonnay is a hand-picked Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay aged ten months on gross lees.
Merricks sits in the cool heart of the Peninsula, close enough to the water that ripening never rushes, and the vines here at 28 years old, planted on grey loam and red ferrosol with a southerly tilt, carry that coolness into the glass. Fruit was sorted by hand and pressed as bunches, then fermented spontaneously on heavy solids in large-format barrels, 15 per cent of them new. A portion finished malolactic conversion naturally. Ten months on full gross lees, no stirring, built the supple and integrated texture that has become the house signature, and you can feel it in the weight of the wine.
Stone fruit and juicy citrus, richness pitched exactly right, and a chewy, mouth-filling texture behind it. Acidity is bracing, presence considerable. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees with roast turkey, grilled kingfish or a bowl of mushroom pasta.
