Garagiste Merricks Pinot Gris 2022

Garagiste Merricks Pinot Gris is a textural, medium-bodied Pinot Gris from the Mornington Peninsula.

The reference point here is Burgundy, not Alsace and certainly not northern Italy, which tells you most of what you need to know about the style. Fruit comes from a north to north-east facing block at Merricks planted 25 years ago, sorted first among the vines and again at the winery. It went to the press and then to old puncheons, full solids and all, for a wild ferment lasting three weeks, with a fifth of the crop going in as whole bunches. Maturation ran seven months on gross lees in neutral old barrels, which gives the wine its chew without adding any obvious oak.

Pear skin, quince and a savoury, almost nutty edge, with enough phenolic grip to make it feel like a light red in the mouth. Serve at 11 degrees, not colder. Roast pork, a bowl of ramen or a mild washed-rind cheese.
