Garagiste Merricks Pinot Noir 2023

Garagiste Merricks Pinot Noir is a whole-bunch inflected Pinot Noir from the north-facing Merricks vineyard.

The whole-bunch percentage moves with the season, and in 2023 it ticked up to 33 from the previous year's 25. Slightly better yields gave more parcels to choose from, and the integrity of the fruit meant it could carry the extra stems without losing balance. Vines here are 27 years old, north-facing, rooted in grey loam and red ferrosol. The ferment ran naturally on a mix of bunches and whole berries, extraction stayed gentle, and nine months in barrel with a quarter new oak followed. The stem character folds in seamlessly, which is a recurring feature of these reds.

Perfumed and bright-fruited, with red berries, spice and deep structure behind gliding weight and snappy grip. It opens out considerably with air. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with roast duck, braised lamb or a good sausage off the grill.
