Garagiste Merricks Rosé 2022

Garagiste Merricks Rosé is a dry Mornington Peninsula rosé made entirely from Pinot Noir.

A south-facing Pinot Noir block at Merricks supplies the fruit, picked for rosé and not bled off a red ferment, which is why the wine has flavour without weight. Bunches went to the press whole on a slow, gentle cycle, then to old puncheons where fermentation proceeded on wild yeast and full solids with no temperature control. Seven months on lees gave the wine its body. Barney Flanders grows and makes serious Pinot Noir, so it follows that the rosé is built like a small white wine and not a sweetened afterthought.

Beautifully pale, with strawberry, red currant and a floral, spicy lift. Texture and a touch of grip give it depth, and the finish is crunchy and fresh. Serve at 9 degrees with grilled fish, a summer salad or bowls of olives and almonds.
