Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir 2018

Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir is a whole-bunch Pinot Noir from a half-acre plot in the Merricks Grove vineyard.

The plot exists as a separate wine because of an observation. Walking Merricks Grove, Barney Flanders noticed that vines sitting over a narrow vein of pure red ferrosol were setting smaller bunches and producing fruit of greater depth than everything around them, and in 2013 he began bottling that ironstone buttonhole on its own. The name translates as land of fire, after the soil colour. The concentration of the fruit is what allows a 100 per cent whole-bunch ferment, and this remains the only Pinot Noir in the range made that way. Twenty-three days on skins followed.

The most powerful and structured of these Pinots, with dark cherry, iron, dried herbs and a smoky, stemmy undercurrent. Tannins are substantial. Serve at 16 degrees after an hour open, with rare roast beef, venison or a slow-cooked lamb shoulder.
