Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir 2019

Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir is a single-plot Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir fermented with 100 per cent whole bunches.

Red ferrosol is common enough across the Peninsula, but a vein of it running pure through half an acre of Merricks Grove is another matter. That seam gives the wine its name, land of fire, and gives the vines above it smaller bunches, lower vigour and more concentrated fruit than their neighbours. A separate bottling has been made since 2013. Because the fruit carries so much natural power, Barney Flanders ferments the whole crop as intact bunches, which he does for no other Pinot Noir he makes, then leaves it 23 days on skins to build tannin slowly.

Tightly wound and savoury, with black cherry, pine needle, cured meat and a distinct ferrous note. The structure is firm and the length considerable. Decant it, serve at 16 degrees, and put it with duck confit, hard cheese or a rib of beef.
