Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir 2022

Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir is a micro-cuvée Pinot Noir from an ironstone plot within Merricks Grove.

Half an acre is all there is, and the boundary was drawn by the soil: a vein of pure red ferrosol threading through Merricks Grove, which the vines above respond to by setting smaller bunches. That gave Barney Flanders his reason to bottle it separately from 2013 onwards, under a name that translates as land of fire. The 2022 saw a shorter maceration than usual at 21 days, followed by ten months in hogsheads with 30 per cent new oak. As ever, the entire crop was fermented as whole bunches, something no other red in the range receives.

Powerful and perfumed, with blood plum, black tea, cedar spice and a wiry, savoury tannin frame. The finish is long and mineral. Give it air, serve at 16 degrees, and match it with duck, venison or slow-roasted pork shoulder.
