Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir 2023

Garagiste Terre De Feu Pinot Noir is a whole-bunch Pinot Noir from a cool season in a single Merricks Grove plot.

Whatever the vintage brings, warm or cool, this wine is made with the whole crop as intact bunches whenever the fruit is good enough. In a cooler year like 2023 the adjustment happens in the cellar instead: a gentler hand during ferment, less working of the cap, more time to let the stems integrate. Twenty-five days on skins, then ten months in hogsheads with a quarter new oak. The plot itself is half an acre of Merricks Grove sitting on a vein of pure red ferrosol, separately bottled since Barney Flanders noticed its smaller bunches and greater depth.

Open, powerful and highly perfumed, with red and black cherry, smoke, dried herb and a savoury complexity that builds in the glass. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Roast duck, mushroom ragu or a plate of charcuterie and hard cheese.
