Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay 2019

Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay is a Chardonnay from a few rows in the top corner of the Merricks Grove vineyard.

A handful of rows at the top of Merricks Grove behave differently to everything around them. Here the vines, 24 years old, sit in brown soil instead of the reddish dirt typical of the area, and a slight easterly aspect gives them a cooler, more sheltered position. Vigour is lower, bunches are smaller, and the fruit arrives with power and intensity intact. This is only the third release, and all of it was raised in one 500-litre François Frères puncheon, about 55 cases in total. Barney Flanders had long suspected the parcel would make something distinct on its own, and the decision to separate it has held.

Fresh white peach with oyster shell and gunflint unfolding behind it, then a palate that is intense, finely drawn and very long. Serve at 11 degrees in a large glass, with roast chicken, grilled scallops or a bowl of clam pasta.
