Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay 2021

Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay is a small-batch Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay from a single parcel of 25-year-old vines.

Soil is what sets these rows apart. In the top corner of Merricks Grove the dirt turns brown, unlike the red ferrosol that dominates the surrounding vineyard, and the vines there face slightly east into a cooler, more sheltered aspect. The upshot is less vigour, smaller bunches and fruit that delivers real intensity without shedding the finesse that runs through every Chardonnay Barney Flanders makes. It is a tiny parcel, and it was kept separate because he was convinced it would say something the rest of the vineyard could not.

Grapefruit, white nectarine and a chalky, briny undercurrent, with acidity that runs the length of the palate. Serve it at 11 degrees and let it open. Try it with oysters, roast pork loin or a simply grilled snapper.
