Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay 2022

Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay is a Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay raised in large, seasoned oak.

Several rows at the top of Merricks Grove sit on brown soil while the rest of the vineyard sits on red, and that difference is the whole reason this wine exists. The 26-year-old vines face slightly east, sheltered and cool, which keeps vigour down and bunches small. Intensity comes easily from fruit like this; the finesse is what Barney Flanders works to protect, and here it was raised in large, seasoned oak with no new wood to get in the way. Every release of this parcel makes a stronger case for keeping it apart from the main Merricks bottling.

A captivating nose of orange citrus, orchard fruit, chalk, white florals and well-pitched smoky reduction. The palate is dense and fleshy with coiled acidity, phenolic grip and a long savoury close. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees with roast chicken, lobster or aged Gruyère.
