Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay 2023

Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay is a single-puncheon Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay from a low-yielding 2023 season.

Only one puncheon of fruit came off these rows in 2023, so there was little to do in the cellar but play it straight. The parcel sits at 90 metres in the top corner of Merricks Grove, facing slightly east, with 27-year-old vines rooted in brown soils instead of the area's more common red dirt. Lower vigour and smaller bunches are the result. Whole bunches went to the press and into a single 500-litre puncheon for fermentation, then nine months on gross lees. What you get from this bottling is a frank reading of the season and this one small plot.

Always salty, chalky and long, and 2023 runs true to type: lemon pith, sea spray and white stone fruit over a fine, mineral spine. Serve at 11 degrees. Oysters, sashimi or a plate of grilled prawns with lemon.
