Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay 2024

Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay is a wild-fermented Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay from a cool 2024 vintage.

Cool grey loam with pockets of crumbly red clay underpins these rows at 90 metres in the top corner of Merricks Grove, where the 28-year-old vines face slightly east into shelter. Vigour is modest, the bunches small, and the fruit consistently makes the sort of intense but finely drawn wine Barney Flanders is known for. After rigorous sorting, whole bunches were pressed into 500-litre puncheons for a wild ferment, then left nine months on gross lees. The 2024 season was cool, and its fingerprints are all over the finished wine.

Salt-licked and clean, opening with a zap of acidity and a flint strike before white stone fruit and anise spice glow through. Serve at 11 degrees, and give it air if you are drinking it young. Oysters, kingfish crudo or roast chicken.
