Garagiste Tuerong Aligoté 2023

Garagiste Tuerong Aligoté is an Aligoté from the vineyard that supplied Australia's other plantings of the variety.

Barney Flanders reckons 2023 is the best version of this wine yet, and he is not wrong. The roll call for Australian Aligoté is short: small parcels in the Whitlands area and at Blind Corner in Margaret River, both grown from cuttings taken from the Mornington mother vineyard that feeds this bottling. Three north-facing rows of vines over 30 years old in sandy grey loam do most of the work, with a handful of younger rows from across the road. Hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed to a single old 500-litre puncheon, nine months on large, soft lees.

Citrus, hay, sweet spice and a delicate summer floral lift, all of it over a driven, linear palate. Balanced, energetic, with a nippy grip at the end. Serve at 10 degrees with oysters, fish and chips or a wedge of young pecorino.
