Garagiste Tuerong Aligoté 2024

Garagiste Tuerong Aligoté is a dry white from 35-year-old Aligoté vines in the sandy grey loams of Tuerong.

Aligoté is Burgundy's other white grape, largely overlooked at home and almost unknown here, which makes a 35-year-old Australian planting of it genuinely unusual. Three north-facing rows at Tuerong supply the bulk, supplemented by younger rows across the road, and the vines are easy to pick out with their large, soft, matte leaves and tight bunches of round berries. Hand-harvested fruit was pressed as whole bunches into one old 500-litre puncheon, fermented, then left nine months on its large, soft lees. An aniseed character always turns up alongside the saline and mineral tones.

Lemon, aniseed and a briny mineral edge, tightly wound, with energy and a grippy finish. Serve it properly cold at 9 to 10 degrees. Oysters, a plate of school prawns or salt cod fritters suit it well.
