Garagiste Tuerong Aligote 2025

Garagiste Tuerong Aligote is a rare Australian Aligoté from three rows of old vines on the Mornington Peninsula.

Australia's Aligoté plantings can be counted on one hand: a small parcel near Whitfield, another at Blind Corner in Margaret River, and the mother vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula that supplied the cuttings for both. This comes from three north-facing rows of vines over 35 years old in the sandy grey loams of Tuerong, plus a few younger rows from a site across the road. The leaves are large, soft and matte, quite unlike the glossy Chardonnay foliage beside them. Hand-harvested fruit was pressed as whole bunches into a single old 500-litre puncheon, then held nine months on its large, soft lees.

Citrus, aniseed and a saline mineral streak, with energy and tension and a nippy grip on the close. Serve cold, around 10 degrees. Oysters, whitebait, a bowl of steamed pipis or anything from the fryer with lemon.
