Garagiste Tuerong Chardonnay 2021

Garagiste Tuerong Chardonnay is a Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay from the earliest-ripening site in the Garagiste stable.

Tuerong is back in the range after a short absence, and it is always first through the door at harvest, picked as much as a fortnight ahead of Merricks. That gap tells you a good deal about how much aspect matters on the Peninsula. The fruit was hand-harvested and hand-sorted, pressed as whole bunches, then fermented naturally on a heavy solids load in 500-litre François Frères puncheons, a fifth of the wood new. A little of it went through malolactic conversion of its own accord before ten months on full gross lees, with no stirring at any point.

Grapefruit and white peach with a saline, leesy undertone and a thread of smoke. Fleshy but taut, and long. Serve at 11 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled whiting or a ripe brie all sit comfortably beside it.
