Description
Girlan Alto Adige Pinot Bianco is a hand-picked Alpine white from the hillside vineyards of Cornaiano.
Pinot Blanc is the quiet backbone of Alto Adige. It is exported less than the region's Pinot Grigio and is generally the more rewarding wine, giving firm acidity, moderate weight and little in the way of overt aroma. Girlan, a growers' cooperative in the hills above Bolzano, makes a Pinot Grigio for the international market but regards its Pinot Bianco as the better bottle, and that is the one shipped to Australia. The fruit is hand-picked from the mineral-rich hillsides of Cornaiano at between 450 and 500 metres, where altitude and cold nights in the Dolomite foothills preserve acidity through a warm growing season. The juice is fermented in tank, with about ten per cent taken through malolactic fermentation to add a little flesh to an otherwise lean, cool-climate frame. No oak is used at any stage.
At its best within three or four years; serve at 10-11°C with river fish, veal schnitzel or a young mountain cheese.
