Description
Girlan 448 Bianco is a dry Alto Adige white blend grown at 448 metres on the hillsides above Cornaiano.
Alto Adige is Italy's most reliably precise white wine region, a set of steep Alpine valleys where German is as widely spoken as Italian and altitude does the work that latitude cannot. Kellerei Girlan is a cooperative based at Cornaiano, above the Adige valley near Bolzano, drawing on member growers across the district. The fruit for this wine all comes from hillside vineyards at 448 metres, which is where the name comes from, though it doubles as a local joke: quattro quattro otto is Tyrolean shorthand for 'hurry up'. The blend is 45 per cent Pinot Blanc with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc splitting the remainder, the Pinot Blanc supplying the shape and the other two the aromatic lift. Winemaking is deliberately unobtrusive, keeping the wine crisp and direct, closer in weight to a Cheverny or a Pouilly-Fumé than to anything richer.
Made to drink young, over the next two or three years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled asparagus, trout or a plate of speck and mountain cheese.
