Girlan IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti Blanco 2019

Girlan Vigneti delle Dolomiti Bianco is a Pinot Bianco-led blend grown high on the hillsides of Alto Adige.

Girlan is a growers' co-operative based at Cornaiano, in the German-speaking north of Italy where Alpine altitude and warm days give whites unusual definition. This blend is roughly forty-five per cent Pinot Bianco with the remainder split between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, all grown at 448 metres on the mineral-rich hillside vineyards of the Cornaiano canton. The altitude gives the name, and there is some local wordplay in it: quattro quattro otto is South Tyrolean shorthand for hurry up. Vinification is straightforward and reductive, in stainless steel, with the aim of holding on to the aromatic lift of the site rather than building texture through oak or extended lees work. The result is an unfussy, dry white in the Alto Adige idiom, drink-now in intent.

At its best in the first two or three years. Good with antipasti, grilled white fish or a summer salad. Serve at 10-12°C.
