Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Chardonnay 2021

Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Chardonnay is a single-block Yarra Valley Chardonnay from vines planted in 2001.

The block in question sits at the crest of a hill and faces east, and it behaves quite unlike the rest of the property. It was picked ten days after the estate Chardonnay yet came in at the same ripeness, which gives a fair indication of how variable these vineyards are from one corner to the next. Fruit was destemmed, lightly crushed and pressed, then spent twelve months in barrel with a quarter new oak, before moving upstairs to tank for a winter, settling of its own accord. Franco d'Anna keeps the intervention minimal throughout.

Lemon, white peach and a chalky, savoury undertone with a whisper of reduction. Concentrated but fine-boned, and long. Serve at 11 degrees in a decent glass. Roast chicken, grilled scallops or a wedge of nutty alpine cheese.
