Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Chardonnay 2022

Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Chardonnay is a Yarra Valley Chardonnay from a low-cropping season and a single hillside block.

Across the road from the original Hoddles Creek property sit two blocks planted in 2001, the Chardonnay of the pair perched on the crest of a hill facing east and set to Bernard clones 95, 96 and 277. Franco d'Anna has always regarded it as a one-off: it comes in a fortnight after every other Chardonnay on the place, which goes a long way to explaining its ripeness and complexity. Hand-picked fruit was destemmed, lightly crushed and pressed, then spent twelve months in barrel with 25 per cent new oak, a winter settling in tank, and roughly a quarter of it through malolactic conversion. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Balanced and savoury, with grapefruit, nectarine, a flick of struck match and oatmeal from the lees. Refined and persistent. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees with roast pork, crab linguine or a mild washed-rind cheese.
