Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Pinot Noir 2021

Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Pinot Noir is a single-block Yarra Valley Pinot Noir with a quarter whole bunches.

A south-facing block planted in 2001 supplies this wine, and it ripens a little behind the rest of the Pinot Noir on the home property. The power and concentration of the 2021 season allowed a 25 per cent whole-bunch inclusion, adding structure and a savoury dimension. From there it went twelve months into barrel with a quarter new oak downstairs, then spent a winter upstairs in tank to settle naturally before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Franco d'Anna's fingerprints are light throughout, which is why the site comes through so clearly.

Bright red fruit, spice, purple flowers and an earthy undertow, with a full, generous palate that keeps its elegance. Tannins are tight and fine-grained, acidity balanced, length complex. Serve at 15 degrees with duck, roast pork or mushroom risotto.
