Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Pinot Noir 2023

Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Pinot Noir is a Yarra Valley Pinot Noir from the warmest Pinot block on the estate.

Cool and wet again in 2023, though the rain eased around December and the crop came in healthy and evenly ripe. The fruit comes from the family's Top Paddock vineyard, from 28 rows of Pinot Noir in a west-facing SRM block that tilts north, the warmest Pinot site on the property. Franco d'Anna put about 15 per cent whole bunches into the ferment, and beyond that the handling matches the estate Pinot Noir exactly. The stems refine the tannins and give the wine a frame to age on. Eighteen months in cask, then bottled with no filtration, fining or stabilisation.

Red cherry, rhubarb and a sappy, peppery spice, with tannins that are fine and drying in a good way. Serve at 15 degrees, decanted briefly. Duck breast, roast quail or a mushroom and lentil braise.
