Hoddles Creek Estate Road Block Chardonnay 2017

Hoddles Creek Estate Road Block Chardonnay is a single-block Chardonnay from the Upper Yarra Valley.

Franco d'Anna bottles a handful of individual blocks from the Hoddles Creek property separately when they have something distinct to say, and this is one of them, taken from the vines along the road. The estate sits high and cool in the upper reaches of the Yarra, planted from 1997 onwards, and the Chardonnay recipe barely changes from wine to wine: whole-bunch pressing, full solids, barrel ferment in mostly seasoned oak, extended time on lees, then bottle. The differences between the block wines come from the dirt and the aspect, not the cellar.

White peach, lemon rind and a chalky, mineral finish, tight in youth and built for the cellar. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees in a large glass. Roast chicken, grilled crayfish or a wedge of aged gruyère.
