Hoddles Creek Estate Syberia Chardonnay 2020

Hoddles Creek Estate Syberia Chardonnay is a single-block Yarra Valley Chardonnay from a very low-yielding hilltop plot.

Ten acres at the highest point of the property, and 1.3 tonnes to the acre counts as an average crop, which tells you how little this block gives up. The rows run east to west, an unusual orientation that puts the sun on the canopy instead of the fruit, and the ripening that follows is long and even. Whole bunches went to the press and straight to barrel, where the wine spent seven months in old oak before a long élevage in bottle that Franco d'Anna insists "preserves vineyard purity". There is a great deal of wine here for the money.

Composed and complex, layered with salinity, fleshy citrus, white pepper and wisps of reduction, carried on tensile acidity and a mineral lick. Serve at 11 degrees. Oysters, roast chicken with lemon or a bowl of pipis and pasta.
