Jim Barry Assyrtiko 2025

Jim Barry Assyrtiko is the Clare Valley's take on Santorini's great white grape, from the family that first brought it to Australia.

In 2008 Peter Barry brought cuttings of Assyrtiko home from Santorini, and after two years in quarantine the first vines were planted at the family's high Lodge Hill vineyard in the eastern ranges of the Clare Valley. The first tiny harvest came in 2014, making the Barrys the pioneers of the variety in Australia, and plantings have since spread to several of their Clare sites. The grape holds its natural acidity well in warm sunshine, giving a white of real freshness with a plush, rounded texture and a mouthwatering saline finish. The winery rates 2025 as one of its best vintages yet.

Serve chilled, around 8 to 10 degrees, with grilled octopus, whole snapper with lemon and oregano, or a Greek salad with plenty of feta. It's a lovely summer white that also has the structure for richer seafood dishes.
