Joh Jos Prüm Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese GOLDKAPSEL 2022

A gold capsule Auslese from Bernkasteler Lay, made only in the tiny quantity the vintage allowed.

The Lay is a south-facing slate slope on the edge of Bernkastel, gentler than the famous Doctor above it and giving Rieslings with a rounder, more open frame. Joh Jos Prüm, based at Wehlen, is one of the reference estates of the middle Mosel and its wines are famous for combining very low alcohol with the ability to age for half a century. Gold capsule bottlings are, in Katharina Prüm's words, limited lots of the best Auslese of a vintage, made from stronger, selected grapes with more concentrated juice and usually a degree of botrytis. Making them this year required multiple passes and draconian selection, with harvest running into the last days of October. Botrytis was rare, but the botrytis-affected fruit brought in accounted for roughly a third of the material. Fermentation is with natural yeasts and the wine is bottled with high acidity and considerable residual sugar.

Delicious young and capable of decades in bottle, where it trades sweetness for harmony; serve at 8-10°C with fruit desserts, or with cheese and spicy food as it matures.
