Joh Jos Prüm Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a tiny-production gold-capsule Auslese from a slate site above Bernkastel.

Lay is a steep, south-facing slope on the Bernkastel side of the river, next to the celebrated Doctor, and it sits a little apart from the estate's core holdings at Wehlen, Graach and Zeltingen. Goldkapsel has no legal standing; it is simply how Joh. Jos. Prüm marks the small lots it considers the best Auslese of a harvest. Only a tiny amount was made, and getting there took multiple passes through the vineyard and draconian selection. Despite an early harvest, the estate was able to bring in some fine botrytis-affected grapes, which accounted for roughly a third of the fruit in these wines. Katharina Prüm notes that gold-capsule bottlings age remarkably longer than basic Auslesen, losing sweetness over many decades while gaining elegance, harmony and depth of profile.

Rewarding young and far more so with age. Serve at 8–10°C with robust savoury dishes and cheese, or a fruit-based dessert such as crème caramel.
